Can Double Glazed Windows Really Help You Save Energy?

Shane's Glass • Nov 04, 2020

Thanks to the recent advancements in window technology, energy-efficient windows have become more available and more affordable for homeowners. If your home uses windows that are designed to be energy efficient, the most obvious benefit is you get to save energy.

Saving energy means saving a good chunk of money each month. Aside from reducing your monthly utility bills, cutting down your energy usage also benefits the environment. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone.

One of the most cost-effective ways to save energy (and our environment!) is to switch to double glazed windows.

Australia’s energy consumption has increased each year for the last few years, according to the Australian Energy Statistics 2020. You can lower your energy consumption, especially during winter, if you use double glazed windows. Reducing your energy consumption also means that you are lowering your carbon emissions, which is better for our planet.

Double glazed windows consist of two separate panes of glass with a sealed air gap in between. This gap serves as an insulative barrier that significantly reduces the transfer of heat inside and outside your space, making your home more energy efficient.

On top of that, the frames of double-glazed windows typically come with features that perfectly complement the insulating properties of double glazing. This further improves their insulating qualities.

A single glazed window, on the other hand, uses a single pane of glass instead of two. With only one glass pane separating your home from the outdoors, single glazed windows won’t provide enough insulation to your space.

If you’re wondering why double-glazed windows are better at insulating than its single glazed counterpart, here’s a quick explanation.

Glass has outstanding heat conducting properties which means it’s a terrible insulator. But when an air vacuum is added between two glass panes, such as in the case of double-glazed windows, it will conduct less heat energy and will reduce heat transfer from one side of the window to the other. The reason is that the vacuum is too small to allow proper conduction, and air is not a good conductor as it slows down the movement of heat energy.

The reduced heat transfer inside and outside means that you benefit from double glazing whether it’s summer or winter. It does a good job of preventing heat from entering your home when the air conditioner is on during summer. It also minimizes the amount of heat escaping during winter.

With double glazed windows, it will be easier for you to maintain the temperature inside your home. If you have an air conditioning unit or a central climate control system, you get to benefit from an increase in energy efficiency.

Though switching from single glazing to double glazed windows will cost you a few extra bucks, it is money well spent considering you can save hundreds with reduced utility bills in the years to come. They basically pay for themselves over time.
